As more and more baby boomers come of age for retirement and downsizing, we are concerned about where will we go. Subsidized care homes are full, costs for higher-end homes catering to every need you may have are sometimes not realistic for people just entering into retirement.

There has been a lot of talk amongst groups and I see a trend on social media where women friends are vowing to take care of one another in their “golden years”. That may not be a bad idea but the question remains: Where does one do this? Do you buy a property or huge home? What is the most worthwhile location that is affordable and how many people would be willing to jump into it and/or commit.

How do you make sure there is enough room? Do you have private bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms with sitting areas for every person to have privacy and perhaps a large main kitchen, dining room and great room for gatherings? Push it even further with an extra room so that a home support person could be brought in and could tend to the needs of those in time of illness or crisis.

It sounds like an ideal plan but maybe not so much in this time of inflated housing prices and land prices. Location would be very important with close amenities and where would this be affordable…last time I looked mansions were not that affordable.

Maybe builders needs to be looking at this kind of dream retirement community living situation, making it affordable for boomers who are going to live longer but still want independence and to have some fun going forward.
